AUTO VALUE GUIDE ..BEFORE WE LOOK UP..CLEARING UP SOME CONFUSION AND SOME DEFINITION OF TERMS!

THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT "VALUES" BANDIED ABOUT WHEN TALKING ABOUT A CAR'S VALUE!.

What is "Salvage"

Most Consumers will not have a need of knowing about this value.

But it is a value that may become important to you in several situations.

What is salvage value ?.To many it is what the auto recycler "junkyard" will give you for a old or damaged car for its parts or metal value.

That number is more accurately called "Scrap" value, however the terms are frequently interchanged.

Many people are not aware that there is a active wholesale market in damaged or salvage vehicles.

The business is conducted by auctions just like regular dealer wholesale auctions, only they are open only to licensed scrap and salvage dealers and Insurance companies

These Auction are fed primarily by Insurance companies inventory, who, after they total your car are looking to get the most they can for the wreck

A wrecked Lexus ,not to mention a Ferrari can easily be worth $20,000 to $100,0000 as a wreck.Even a lowly Toyota with low miles can be worth thousands.

Sure the parts are valuable but the big money comes from the fact that even after Carfax..many people repair wrecked vehicles for Resale

Don't forget these auctions also get recovered thefts that the insurance company has already paid for,Hail,Flood, vandalized and impounded and storage cars

It is a large and growing market

What do you care?

If your vehicle is in one of the categories in the last paragraph, and you have received a offer from either a dealer or insurance company..don't assume it is only worth the scrap metal value or the parts car value.

If it is less than 5 years old; for starters....it is likely worth a lot more

A common scenario you may come across? You car is totaled .The insurance company gives you a figure that they will pay.Usually somewhere on that page is a "buy back" figure for the remains of your car. This number is supposed to be what the insurance company thinks the car will bring at the salvage auction.

You have the right to get your old car back by paying that figure [buy back].It would not be a bad Idea to call a few local salvage yards or body shops to see what they would pay for your wreck.

Or you could try a local or internet ad

If there is no interest just don't buy it back

If there is ;it is found money !

Unfortunatley There is no commonly available database of salvage values available to the public
