AUTO VALUE GUIDE ..BEFORE WE LOOK UP..CLEARING UP SOME CONFUSION AND SOME DEFINITION OF TERMS! OVERVIEW
THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT "VALUES" BANDIED ABOUT WHEN TALKING ABOUT A CAR'S VALUE!.What is "Private Party" value.
Private Party value is the price you are supposed to be able to sell your car for, to another retail consumer,adjusted like all book values for condition and mileage.
This value ,in my opinion ,is useless.The reason is simple .
No one in the auto business uses this database and what it is actually based on [other than wishful thinking] is unknown.
This Database seems to have been developed originally by Edmunds ;although other companies offer a similar product.
Edmunds needed a product to sell in magazines stands and auto publications
Dealer guide books were supposed to be proprietary to the trade,and subscriptions are expensive
Selling wholesale guide books to the public would lead to a revolt by the dealer community as the public would have the same information as the dealer
So the Private Party book solved two problems:
1]keep dealers happy by not making wholesale data available.
2]Nice Business selling mass market guide books to public at last.
It's about as good a idea as Realtors setting up a "Private Party" guide book for Home Prices based on asking prices [unlike the MLS database which shows actual sales and is proprietary to realtors].
..all such a book would show was the unrealistic price hopes of people who: payed retail prices,may have paid too much,don't account for depreciation of the property,and just want as much back as they can get.
Sort of a "Wish Book" LOL
