Part of the problem is ..cars are built by "Car Nuts" ..they just assume that everyone is fascinated with the design and engineering implications of their creations !and the usually esoteric letters and symbols :that the the engineers and marketing department dream up. Who doesn't know the difference between a 633i a 633csi and a 733i ? [ Those are BMW's ].If you DID know that they were all BMWs did you know which was the most expensive? which was the larger engine option? what size engine? manual or automatic? only available manual? available with sunroof? including alloy wheels? Leather Standard?.

The model permutations are mind numbing..but extremely important to the value of the car in the resale market,especially in cars under 5 years old and car of high price.This is because buyers are picky and want what they want.

A tiny error of not including the "i" or "LX" or "EX" when you input your data into the value lookup can throw the appraisal off by thousands of dollars

Carefully look up the trim options using the invoice if you have it or the VIN number

Make sure you know the engine size and which transmission;if the database requests it

Sometimes you will try to input the data and the form doesn't list it or won't take your input ;99% of the time you have something wrong !... either the year of your vehicle or the trim code

But why do people care so much ?

Besides the fashion statement that a car is ;[and remember that tastes change for used car buyers too over time]there is the "grapevine" factor...If a certain model car never seems to break and runs well for 100s of thousands of miles.[Civic -Corolla].word get around ;especially in the used car trade... .[since the dealer usually has to fix these cars either for waranttee or to recondition them]..this drives up the used price.

The reverse is true ;if a used car model get a terrible reputation,usually for a mechanical problem [Chyrsler minivan -trannsmissions Tauraus transmissions],but sometimes just because it is ugly and no one want it used....it sooner or later feeds into the book value in the used market.

But usually ..jokes aside; is not the whole Brand that has problems or;is wonderful...It is a CERTAIN MODEL or a CERTAIN ENGINE or a certain TRIM OPTION
